Deciding on Ventriloquism

In fifth grade, Terry Fator picked up a book called Ventriloquism for Fun and Profit and that would lead him to start learning about the stagecraft. Fator picked up his first ventriloquism dummy when he was only 10 years old. Since then, he has entertained his family with his impersonations and singing through his dummies. He told the Joplin Globe that the reason why he learned how to sing while doing ventriloquism was because he thought other people looked silly singing in their cars so, he learned how to sing without moving his lips.

During the late 1980s, Terry Fator joined the band Freedom Jam as a lead singer. When singing, Fator would impersonate the singer of the original songs. This would soon lose the band’s chance from signing with a record label due to Fator’s unwillingness to sing in his own voice.

After leaving the band, Terry Fator decided to pursue his ventriloquism career. He decided to combine his singing and his impression into his ventriloquist artform. Unfortunately, Fator faced difficulties as he dealt with many years of being unsuccessful. At one point, Fator’s show only attracted one audience member.

Success Through Television

Terry Fator was desperate in finding an audience for his ventriloquism and almost gave up until his family pushed him to keep moving forward. That ended up pushing Fator to go onto America’s Got Talent in order to get some exposure. At first, Fator was skeptical of his chances since some judges were already reluctant of ventriloquism in general. However, he stunned the world with his talents. Not only was he a ventriloquist, but a talented comedian and singer.

During his time on the television talent show, Terry Fator became an opener for Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, and Styx. Fator also performed for General Motors and AT&T. Fator ended up stealing the hearts of Americans across the country and won the second season of America’s Got Talent.

Since his win, Terry Fator has performed all over the country including long-time performances in Las Vegas to appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show and the Late Show with David Letterman.
